Heritage Lottery Award to BACF Commonwealth Connections

Project

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded a grant of £40,400 to The Bedford African & Caribbean Forum

towards their project to help young people in Bedford learn about their African and Caribbean heritage.

The Bedford African and Caribbean Forum is a registered charity organisation established since 1998 to promote the social and economic needs of the African and Caribbean community in Bedford.  They have a continuous ethos of working across the broad spectrum of their community, from young people to the elderly, with service users and providers.

The aims of the Heritage project are:

  • For the African and Caribbean young people living in Bedford to learn and know more about Black people’s history and the historical Commonwealth connections of the British Empire, Africa and the CaribbeanIslands dating from the 16th century
  • To encourage young people to take an active part in communities’ activities by learning about their own and other peoples heritage
  • To help a wider range of people to take an active part in knowing more about the diverse heritage of the people of Bedford
  • To document the heritage of the African and Caribbean community in Bedford for conservation and inclusion in public archives.

During the project the Bedford African and Caribbean Forum will be working in partnership with the Cecil Higgins Art Gallery & Bedford Museum and Bedford Borough Libraries. The project will create five new part-time employment opportunities. Recruited volunteers from the wider population of Bedford who are not of African or Caribbean origin will receive training on oral history recording, research, translation and transcription work. They will also get to learn about African and Caribbean histories and cultures. People knowing more about each other’s culture and values result in a more understanding and tolerant society.

Commenting on the award, the Chair of BACF, Carl Bernard said “This is an excellent opportunity for the Bedford African & Caribbean Forum in the furtherance of their work within the African and Caribbean community.”

Robyn Llewellyn, Head of Heritage Lottery Fund East of England, said “This interesting project will give young people the chance to learn about and explore both their heritage, and that of the many diverse communities that make up Bedford in the 21st Century. At HLF we understand that valuing and sharing our diverse histories changes lives, brings people together and can provide the foundation for a modern confident society.”
